Vitamin D3 and Osteoporosis

I would like to know whether Vitamin D3 capsules or tablets may be taken to treat osteoporosis, instead of injections of the same and will the effectiveness be the same?

*** Answer by Alan Braun, MD, FACP

Vitamin D orally is helpful in treating osteoporosis, but neither it nor the injectable forms should be relied on as sole treatment in someone with proven osteoporosis. The diagnosis should first be confirmed by some sort of bone density test such as a DEXA scan. Then, treatment would include calcium supplement (at least 1000 mg a day), vitamin D (at least 400 units a day), and some sort of drug to increase calcium deposition in bone. Depending on the age, sex and menstrual status of the person, as well as certain underlying but unrelated diseases such as breast cancer, the drug could include a female hormone, Evista, Fosamax, or nasal calcitonin.
